Worldwide Sunrise, Sunset And Twilight Time Calculator

This calculator requires the use of Javascript enabled and capable browsers. This script displays the local and GMT (often called UTC, though technically not the same) calculated time information, anywhere in the world, for the sunrise, sunset and twilight times, based on the latitude and longitude of the area. (This is a greatly modified version of our original script that did the same but displayed it differently.) We have supplied several diverse worldwide areas as examples, but you can (obviously), manually select your own. To determine the information for any area manually, enter the latitude in the range of -90 degrees to +90 degrees, South (the negative entries), or North; also enter the longitude in the range of -180 degrees to +180 degrees, East (the negative entries), or West. All entries are in degrees, minutes and seconds, or you may enter decimal degrees only in the degrees box. Also enter the date, month and year of the objective information. (The only limitation is that the year falls between 1901 and 2099.) Click on Calculate Sunrise/Sunset to display the information. If you would like to convert any GMT to your local time, please use our Time Zone Converter or our Time Zone Information Table. You may click Clear Values to do another.

If you do not know how to find the latitude and longitude of a particular location, check the information about the city, a local airport or similar important landmark as it is generally published and available as public information, or you may use our Zip Code Locator to determine what your latitude and longitude co-ordinates are, returned in decimal degrees (nice of us...). That latitude and longitude information, though accurate, must be interpreted differently from the NOAA data here (not nice of them...). The longitude is negative in the West and positive in the East in the Zip Code data from the US Geological Survey mapping service. (See TANS.) Many times, information of latitude and longitude is published in degrees, minutes and seconds; while we accept either in this calculator, to convert to decimal degrees, use our Degrees, Minutes And Seconds To Decimal Degrees And Radians Calculator. We also have several others that will also do the job. Worldwide, you may also try The Worldwide Directory Of Cities And Towns for latitude and longitude, though accuracy is limited to generally just basic degrees. More latitude and longitude information...

For an area close to you from the pre-entered areas, select a location from the City pulldown menu, OR select "Enter Lat/Long ->" from the pulldown menu, and manually enter the latitude, longitude and time zone information in the appropriate text boxes. There is no universally accepted format for displaying latitude and longitude information. The following sign conventions are used with this data from NOAA:

Latitude in NOAA's data: Positive in Northern Hemisphere, Negative in Southern Hemisphere
Longitude in NOAA's data: Positive in Western Hemisphere Negative in Eastern Hemisphere

Latitude and Longitude can be in degrees, minutes and seconds, or simply decimal degrees entered in the "Deg" field. (If you enter decimal degrees, the minutes and seconds will be calculated for you and displayed. If you would like to manually calculate decimal degrees to minutes and seconds, try our Individual Decimal Degrees, Radians, Minutes And Seconds Calculators.) If you select a city from the pulldown menu, the latitude, longitude and time zone fields will be filled in automatically. If you want to input latitude, longitude or time zone manually, be sure to select "Enter Lat/Long -->" from the City pulldown box, or your numbers will be overwritten by the selected city's location. There is no "partial" manual entry.

You can enter a different time zone for a location by selecting "Enter Lat/Long -->" in the City pulldown box. Otherwise, the time zone associated with the selected city's Local Standard Time will be automatically entered. Selecting "Yes" in the Daylight Saving field will cause the resulting sunrise, sunset and solar noon times to be adjusted forward one hour. If you are uncertain of the time zone for a location, refer to our Time Zone Converter or our Time Zone Information Table for a little timely help.

The program retrieves the current date from your computer (in YOUR time zone), and fills the month, day and year fields. To perform calculations for a different date, simply select a month in the pull down menu, and enter the day and four digit year in the appropriate input boxes. When entering a day or year, you will need to click the "Calculate Sunrise/Sunset" button to update the results for this date.

Once the calculation results are displayed, you may use your web browser's "Print" function to obtain a hardcopy of the results.

For locations above the Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle, when a sunrise or sunset does not occur on the given day the program locates the local time and date of the most recent sunrise or sunset, and the next sunset or sunrise. When this occurs, the UTC fields will display "prior" or "next" information instead of the UTC times.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For latitudes greater than 72 degrees N and S, calculations are accurate to within 10 minutes. For latitudes less than +/- 72° accuracy is approximately one minute.
