This calculator requires the use of Javascript enabled and capable browsers. This calculator is designed to give the amount of change, attenuation or gain, in decibels, you can expect with a change in receiver distance. Enter the data and click on calculate. As an example of anticipated data, if you were standing 10 feet from a noise source, and were to move to a location 100 feet away from that same sound source, you would expect to see a calculated drop in level of about 20dB. Sound that is projected from a given source drops in level at about 6dB with each doubling of the initial distance. Temperature and surrounding conditions, natural and man-made, all have an effect. If you start at 50 feet from the source and move to 100 feet from the source, there will be about a 6dB drop in level. If you move from 500 feet to 1000 feet, you will also have roughly a 6dB drop in level. You may use feet, meters or any designation of measure so long as it is consistent.
