Bowling Ball Speed Calculator

This calculator requires the use of Javascript enabled and capable browsers. This calculator is designed to give the approximate speed of a bowling ball when thrown from the foul line of a bowling lane until it crosses the lateral plane of the headpin.

Enter the number of seconds from the time the ball leaves the hand or fingers of the bowler until impact with the headpin or the lateral plane of the headpin is crossed. The measurement of time should be made with a stopwatch for closest possible accuracy, by an assistant. When you have made your measurement and entry, click on Calculate. The speed is returned in several logical measurements.

It should be noted that the length of the lane from foul line to the center of the headpin is 60 feet. The length of the lane from foul line to the back of the pin deck is 62 feet 10 and 3/16 inches long or 19.16 meters, while the width is 3.4121 to 3.5105 feet, or 1.04 to 1.07 meters. It is beyond the scope of this calculator to try to factor in the small amount of extra distance from a wide breaking thrown ball or the exact point of release; the default distance is measured as a straight ball with a distance of 60 feet, or 18.88 meters, foul line to plane of the head pin. However, if you wish to alter that distance, you may do so in feet or meters, decimal fractions allowed.
