CSGNetwork MetaSearch Engine

Special note as of 4/1/04. It appears that the life of this search technology is approaching the end of the road, pun intended. We attempted to let it die gracefully in the face of truly spectacular search engine technology, such as Google. We had sooo many complaints about taking down the engine because of the cornpone humor, not the technology. We will leave it up but if you really want search results, use one of the major engines!

3/17/03. We would like to say Thank You to all that have waited for the return of this engine! Many of you thought that the armadillo didn't make it across the road... (The sympathy cards were very touching.) Some of you thought the mighty Mississippi flooded the banks one too many times. Some figured that Highway 61 turned left when it should have turned right. Actually, the armadillo got sick on a spoiled moon pie in the middle of the road and needed much TLC and recovery time. The armadillo is back, faster than ever (we're not sure about smarter...) and so is a new server. Early tests show this to be better than ever. Enjoy! Please report any strange happenings or sightings. (No not UFOs or Elvis... Just unusual returns from the engine.)

CSGNetwork is utilizing this metasearch technology from Highway 61 Highway 61, a friendly family operation very much like ours. This search encompasses the best databases of several of the major search engines: Yahoo, Excite, Fast, ePilot, 7 Search, ValleyAlley, Overture (GoTo), About, AltaVista, LookSmart, WebCrawler, Direct Hit, Big What, Ah-Ha! and Sprinks. On good days, with a good attitude and much patience, you'll get results from all of them; on bad days at least a few. Search results are from the far reaches of the World Wide Web and are ranked using a secret Southern algorithm (mostly in random order). If you are not familiar with search engine technology, a brief (are you kidding?) look at the instructions might be helpful (maybe, but maybe not...) in getting the results you would like!

Description and Instructions

Highway 61 uses a "metasearch" technology. That has advantages and disadvantages. Your search will be sent to a number of Internet search engines and the results will be compiled into a single page.

Currently, under default conditions, your search is submitted to Yahoo, Excite, Fast, ePilot, 7 Search and ValleyAlley. Based on the wind blowing in the right direction, your patience level and attitude, it can also go to Overture (Goto), About, AltaVista, LookSmart, WebCrawler, Direct Hit, Big What, Ah-Ha! and Sprinks. It does take a bit longer...

Your search is treated differently by most of these sites. Generally, multiple words are treated as a Boolean "or," meaning results may contain any one of your search terms. If you only want results that contain all of your search terms, use Boolean "and." This is the same as putting a plus sign (+) in front of each word. If you select Boolean "or", you can still place a plus sign (+) in front of one or more words. Placing a minus sign (-) in front of a word excludes selections containing that word. (You can do that too...)

Yahoo always treats multiple words as a Boolean "and", meaning all search terms must appear in any matches. Experiment... Take a chance.. Live life to the fullest... Where is that box of chocolates?

Want to test the fortitude of your computer? (Only those computers with healthy memory should use this option!) Opening new windows for each link might just do that but it will offer the ability to view more than one at a time. Uncle Jeff suggests that you try it at least once. You will have no worse luck than saving Confederate money.

Some of the database sites may timeout before returning their results, especially if you're a "Type A" personality and set your patience level low. Being a bit "laid back" will return better results. A trip to the reading room assures good and plentiful results, at least with the search. A good attitude not only helps you but the rest of the world as well!

You can indicate a general quantity of hits that you would like per search by choosing "Lots" or "Bury me". "Lots" will return anywhere from about 35 to 75, assuming there are that many hits potentially. "Bury me" will return about 60 to 125. Obviously, the more results, the longer the wait. If network or server traffic is heavy, the wait can take a while, maybe a couple of whiles. (A while, as defined in a modern Southern dictionary, is just enough time to go to the refrigerator to get a Pepsi and a moon pie (see refresh). An older "true" Southern dictionary defines while as the amount of time for an armadillo to cross the road. An amount of time longer than a while is called "Fresh Road Kill", a Southern blue plate special usually followed by a piece Of Pi. Longer than that is an all-night Gospel sing. Take your pick.) Speaking of armadillos, will he make it across the road? Kind thoughts help in the search process; negative vibrations sort of "kill" the servers' robot assistants' desire to return what you are looking for. Let your conscience be your guide!

The results are ranked (lucky you!) for your convenience. The ranking is based on how many sites on which the link was found, how those sites ranked it, how many blackeyed peas fit into the average gunny sack (divided by 2 on odd days and by 3 on even days) and the current temperature in exceptionally beautiful downtown Natchez, Mississippi, one of the hot spots (ho, hum... well, maybe not exactly a hot spot but still beautiful in Southern tradition, and very pleasant, in Southern terms, to eyeball) on the real Highway 61 (if Bob Dylan liked it, it can't be all bad)! On to the results! (As I said before, the ranking is mostly in random order, with a few exceptions and some luck...)

All kidding aside, you will find more of what your are looking for via this engine technology than on any of the individual sites, as long as you are looking for Web information. Good luck and thanks for using this search. If you prefer an individual engine or an alternative metasearch, CSGNetwork's Listing of WWW Search Engines and Sites is also available to you. In our opinion, Overture (previously GoTo.Com) is one of the easiest and fastest; try it! Be aware however, that the results returned are from PAID inclusion into the database. Sort (no pun intended) of destroys the philosophy of the Internet... Without a doubt, Google is the best.
