Rainwater Collection Calculator

This calculator requires the use of Javascript enabled and capable browsers. This calculator is designed to supply the area of any potential collection surface of any length and width in square feet and/or square inches, based on the length and width values entered in feet and inches, and the potential and estimated actual rainwater recovery in gallons. You may enter only feet, only inches or a combination of both in either the width, length or depth fields. The total width, length and depth will be updated automatically in total inches. Also fill in the estimated water recovery percentage as a number; the default is 60 percent, entered as 60 (not .60). Click the Calculate button for all fields to be calculated. To do another, click the Clear Values button and then enter a new set of values. You may also wish to just change certain fields and recalculate. Calculated accuracy of current Javascript enabled browsers is generally 16 places. The defaults yield 120 square feet, 17280 square inches, 74.8051944768 potential gallons for recovery, and 44.883116686079994 gallons factored by the percentage, each independent of the other; the result is NOT a combination of feet and inches.

Rainwater can be collected from any surface and stored to allow use at a later time for non-drinking water applications such as lawn and flowers. Due to direct loss and other factors, such as evaporation, there is a percentage of the actual potential that is very close for collected water volume. In moist cool areas, that may be in the range of 85% and in dry, hot, desert conditions, it is closer to 60%. Intelligent use of our water, including rainwater, is a responsibility for each of us.
