Our Dream Computer - Cray T90 Series

We're often asked, "What is your favorite computer?" or "Which computer would you have if you could have your choice?" Well, the answer is easy on both of those but as of yet, we don't have one. The Super SuperComputer - a Cray T932. Our request is still back ordered I guess.

This puppy co-processes with 32 parallel CPUs in a tightly coupled bridge. Each of those processors is about 600 times faster than the current state of the art PC with a 450mhz Pentium II and all the bells and whistles. It has a peak performance of 56 See the definition for GFLOPS per second. (If you are not familiar with that term, it is the equivalent of "pretty fast, maybe even faster".) Base memory is 416 GB active and a bandwidth of 32 GB per second. This guy is even liquid cooled! To put the speed in the proper perspective, this would process the accounting data in my checkbook (How long does it take to process zero balances?) about five years before I write the checks; better than that, four years before my wife can write them. She's the fastest check writer I know! How much you ask, (don't ask...); even Bill Gates would have to finance it! I guess I'll wait a while longer... Maybe I can get another year out of my 8086.
